Why a network cannot do AOG
A next-day network optimises for cost per parcel across millions of items. AOG optimises for one item arriving as fast as physically possible. Those are opposite problems, and a network cannot solve the second one no matter what service level is bought.
Aviation paperwork adds a second reason: certification travels with the part, and a document separated from its component in a sorting hub makes the part unusable until it is reunited.
