At 11pm on 31 December 2020, the UK ended the transition period and officially left the EU. But where has that left us, two weeks later?
As a Logistics and Transport Company, we have been training our staff on the new Customs procedures, ready for any UK to EU deliveries we will have in the future to ensure we’re all clued up, and know exactly what we need to do, to get our drivers across the border.
What else has been going on, since the change?
Food shortages
You’ve probably seen/heard it already, that big named supermarkets are reporting huge food shortages across the country; due to the new regulations around customs paperwork, with freight companies either not knowing what paperwork they need or can’t get it because companies that would process it on their behalf are over capacity. This has caused problems for supermarkets – with many fresh and frozen food products being ‘out of stock on the shelves.
Truckers avoid UK Ports
With all the new rules and regulations in place at UK ports, it’s been reported that EU haulage companies are rejecting delivery contracts to the UK, to avoid post- Brexit red tape at UK ports.
In fact, the number of German logistics companies rejecting contracts to the UK have more than doubled since the Brexit transition, with French firms rejecting three times as many UK deliveries. This has increased fears of shortages across the UK in the upcoming weeks.
Exports to EU expected to plunge
Another problem after the Brexit deal is that Exports to the EU are expected to plunge by more than one third; after many freight companies are still trying to get their heads around the new customs processes. However, to make things even worse, even if logistics companies do send their vehicles to EU – ports in the UK are still suffering a backlog, a significant disruption and delays.
